In addition to his three Guggenheim Fellowships, an Intercollegiate Fellowship for composition, teaching, and lecturing (likely awarded during the early20s), and the Pasadena Music and Arts Association Fellowship, Harris received a great many other honors throughout his career. Among them are the Award of Merit from the National Association of Composers and Conductors (1940); an award from the National Committee for Music Appreciation for the Folksong Symphony (1940); a citation from the United States Treasury Dept. "in recognition of distinguished and patriotic services to our country" (1941); election as an Honorary Fellow for Stanford University for the Ode to Truth (1941); an Honorary Doctor of Music from Rutgers University (1941); the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Medal "for eminent services to chamber music" (1942); election to the National Institute of Arts and Letters (1944, followed in 1979 by induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters); an Honorary Doctor of Music from the University of Rochester (1944); a first citation honor from the National Radio Education Convention in Chicago for the series Let's Make Music (1944); a citation for distinguished citizenship from Lee Knous, Governor of Colorado (1948); election as Man of the Year by the Pittsburgh Junior Chamber of Commerce (1953); the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation Award for Symphony No. 7 (1954); an Honorary Doctor of Music from the Philadelphia Academy of Music (1956); election to National Honorary Life Membership in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity (1956); induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame (1957; he also received during the same visit on which this last honor was accorded an induction into the Ponca Indian Tribe as an Honorary Chief); election to the Academia de Bellas Artes y Sciencias de Puerto Rico (1961); an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the Westminster Choir College (1964); an honorary membership in Alpha Nu (the National Jesuit Honor Society; 1965); election as a Knight Commander of the Knightly Order of St Brigitte (1965); La Medalla del Institute Colombiana de Cultura in Bogota (1972); a Medal of Achievement from the Brandeis University Creative Arts Commission (1973); and appointments as Composer Laureate of the City of Covina (1976) and Honorary Composer Laureate of the State of California (1977).
